Donald Trump has been one of the biggest anomaly of a presidential candidate that the United States has ever seen. From his days on Celebrity Apprentice to the center of the Oval Office, Trump has been in the spotlight for quite some time. He has no political experience in the typical sense, he has been seen first and foremost as a businessman that has expensive ventures all over the world. For many, when Trump decided to make a campaign for president of the United States, many people outside of his supporters saw it as some kind of business stunt or a joke. But, to peoples amazement Trump not only was the Republican nominee, he is now the President of the United States.
Trumps image is something that has been ridiculed since the day he decided to run a campaign for president. From Alec Baldwin skits portraying the president as someone incompetent and goofy, to all the memes that have been made of this polarizing figure that takes over the news headlines with ease. He is seen by thousands of Americans as racist, misogynistic, and even fascist. When the polling numbers were coming in that this was not some sort of joke but the actual reality the country was facing, people were in shock, terrified, and fearful. With that being said, there were also the lower educated class that saw Trump as a savior, someone that would allow their voices to be heard that had not been heard by the Obama administration. Many of these Americans felt that they were being labeled as racist, bad people, by other politicians such as Hillary Clinton who ran against Trump in this previous election. Because of Trumps sporadic and elementary way of speaking, supporters felt he gave an escape away from all the political correctness that other candidates had forced upon them. Donald Trump tried to and is still creating an image that he is one for the people, that he hears the calls of every American and wants to bring jobs back to the “American” people. Which of course is a broad statement considering that the United States is full of all sorts of races and backgrounds of people. Trump has created a powerful image of someone that will get actions done, and not only done but done in a timely manner (which so far he has, even if they are unconstitutional).
I think for Trump to better his image among the American people he needs to show empathy for the actions he takes and listen to what the people are saying. While it is great that he is getting the actions he promised his supporters done, he needs to show remorse when millions of Americans are protesting what he is doing. I think the campaign strategy’s goal was to make Trump a man of power and action, but, there has to hit a certain point when the disapproval of so many people might make you question what you are doing. That being said, that is part of the Trump appeal, he does not listen to anyone else but himself, avoiding the “greedy politicians”. So, to conclude, it is clear that Trumps image is one of two images, a savior for the American people, or one of evil villain. Only time will tell what Trumps image will look like in the following years of his presidency.
